Colossians 3:20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.
Luke 18:20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.
Deuteronomy 27:16 Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen.
Leviticus 19:3 "`Each of you must respect his mother and father, and you must observe my Sabbaths. I am the LORD your God.

Anger and God's Promise

We begin a study of God's promises. I have taken the scriptures from the above mentioned book, expanded a few of them for context, and added my own commentary. The first one, in alphabetical order, is:

Anger

Psalm 145:8 The Lord is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.

The first thing we see is that God, whom we desire to emulate, is slow to anger.

Nehemiah 9:13-17 Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments: And madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy servant: And gavest them bread from heaven for their hunger, and broughtest forth water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and promisedst them that they should go in to possess the land which thou hadst sworn to give them. But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and hearkened not to thy commandments, And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.

Even in the face of disrespect and downright arrogant disobedience, God is slow to anger. As soon as His anger passes, which is soon, He graces with joy.

Psalms 30:5 For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
James 1:19-20 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

James advises us of ways to avoid the angry outburst and how to avoid causing strife. Solomon then advises us to remember and use patience.

Ecclesiastes 7:8-9 Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools. We also begin to see in Proverbs that the wise stay away from evil which we will explore more deeply further on and that the angry behaving man is likely to be foolish and hated.

Proverbs 14:16-17 A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident. He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated.
Proverbs 16:32-33 He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city. The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the Lord. Proverbs 15:18-19 A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife. The way of the slothful man is as an hedge of thorns: but the way of the righteous is made plain.

I have a Pyracantha Bush next to my front door. I have to trim it or I cannot go in and out the house without getting stabbed, and I do mean stabbed, if any know the pyracntha, they know how I mean. So I trim the bush occasionaolly, just occasionally enough to keep it back and allow me egress and ingress and to mow my yard without flatting the tires on my mower. But the trimming is absolutely no fun for without great care you get stabbed, and then after trimming and during cleanup, even with heavy gloves on, the thorns will often pierce the leather and prick your palm.
I think you will have to read KJV on this verse and the next to understand my comments, TNIV has a very decidedly different take here below and above.
What I read in the following scripture is that when kindness, fairness and justice are used to train an employee, that employee will become like your own child in respect to you. Angry people cause much descension, but an humble person gains honor.

Proverbs 29:21-23 He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child shall have him become his son at the length. An angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression. A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.

Psalm 37:5-11 Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday. Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

Be faithful to God and He will grant you your desires and His righteou8sness will be yours to use as a light for your paths.
The wicked prosper only temporily and we will soon be wondering what has happened to them.

Proverbs 22:24-29 Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go: Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul. Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts. If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee? Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set. Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.

Here we are given some helps to keep us from developing inappropriate anger responses both in ourselves and others and to become Peacemakers.

Proverbs 15:1-3 A Soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness. The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

God knows when we have been bad or good, so...

Colossians 3:21 Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.
Ephesians 4:26-27 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil. So anger is not the sin it is what the inappropriate response to or in anger leads us that is the sin.

Proverbs 19:11 The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

A discreet man avoids angry outbursts and shares forgiveness.

Proverbs 21:19-21 It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman. There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up. He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honour.

A man who dwells alone in a desert place where no thorny bushes can grow is better of that one who must put up with a contentionus person. A responsibility met prevents the disease of bitterness, disallutionment and discourgemt from blowing anger into a sinful situation.

Jesus gives us some idea of the consequences of inappropriate anger expression.

Matthew 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

We then read that we should let off angry attitudes and behaviours and habits and instead endorse the good things of God.

Ephesians 4:31-32 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
Romans 12:19-21 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
Proverbs 25:21-22 If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward thee.

Above we even read both from Jesus and from the Old Testament that loving our enemy is what we should be about.

Proverbs 27:4 Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?

Colossians 3:8-17 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Sarai had chased Haggai, her handmaid, who was pregnant with Ishmael, Abram's son, away from the camp with meanness and jealousy. So Haggai determined to go home to Egytpt from Canaan, a long hot dry walk through a sandy hilly rocky desert. She found a large rock and was trying to cool herself in the shade of that rock when God spoke to her.

Gen 16:13-14 And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me? Wherefore the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

God showed her a running brook of cool fresh water where she refreshed herself and returned to the camp of Abram.

I. People like to be noticed when in public. Consider their antics at sporting events when they are displayed on the jumbotron.

This was when they were enslaved in Egypt, so we know God sees us in our meanest and lowest estate.

II. People would rather not be under an intrusive and critical gaze, but rather a beneficial one. God is Love. So What-Me-Worry?
A. Ps 94:7-9 Yet they say, The Lord shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it. Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise? He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?
B. 1 Peter 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.
C. 2 Chron 16:9 For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.

III. People are known by God in a very intimate relational way.

God forgives us by supplying the bridge on which to cross(the cross of Messiah) across the chasm which separates us from fellowship with Him, caused by our own individual sin-however little or however big or numerous-if we but admit and submit and commit to Jesus Christ His Son. He sees our sin, He sees our repentance, He see us when we forgive, He sees our faith, however small.

I have mixed the presentation of the last two chapters because I see a need in our lives to understand that because of who God is is why He can be so personal to each and every one of us.
This section from the chapter on Sufficiency seems to fit here a little earlier in my presentations to you than in the author’s. But her summary of this section is a good one to consider for the reasons God is Sufficient to those who believe.

Waiting on the Lord ref Psalm 123 and Deut 7:9

Have you ever read your scriptures and confessed all your sins and turned everything over to God and still you thought 'What is the use?'

Today It was my turn.

Have you ever prayed and prayed and prayed but decided 'God must not care?'

Today it was my turn.

Have you been still and quiet as a mouse, and listened, and growned, and growned and listened in silence and wondered 'Can He be there?'

If you have, it feels like it has been 'my turn' for a long time. We are not alone. In the great book of prayers God has given us it becomes quicly evident Psalmists have been there before us.

Today it was my turn.

In Psalm 123 is written just such a prayerful expression. yet we also see anticipation. Imagine a waiter in a diner that never closes, where people are not always stopping to dine but there is always something to be done for the Diner itself or those diners-past present and future.

1Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens.

2Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, uintil that he have mercy upon us.

3Have mercy upon us, OLord, have mercy upon us" for we are exceedingly filled with contempt.

4Our soul is exceedoingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.

Today it was my turn.

My grandmother, 'Gwen', is what her grandchildren and friends called her, Gwen battled the effects of Ploio since she was thirteen. She road horses, Connie, she married my grandfather, Charlie, or tamed him might be the correct terminology, Cheryl, for he was a mule skinner early on, a race car driver and award winning car mechanic, knew all the best fishing pools on most bends of most branches of the Brazos, Craig, played the Tennessee Flattop Box like he wrote it, Michael, and according to legend, could tattoo an elephant, Randy. Gwen bore him two daughters and ran a printing and card business. With twisted hands and feet she was able to drive a car during an accident free 70 years of driving.

She showed me how to mop a floor, wash dishes, to cream and freeze coorn I had picked and chopped and shucked, to pick, shell and freeze blackeyes I had picked, and to pick, snap, and can green beans9the contender variety).
Later she showed me how to print cards and napkins and invitations and to make cold calls on customers who still come looking for good service.

Gwen is remembered as a woman who could be counted on to either get the job done or else see to it that it was done! My granny wore army boots!(pediatric boots, really) to help her keep her balance, til Charlie, who also buttoned herbuttons, couldn't lace 'em up for her anymore, then she wore house shoes and rolled around in a wheel chair, callingt her clients with that switchboard trained silky smooth voice and manner. She was an elocutionist and speech teacher, specializing in emotive recitations, you know, known today as cowboy poetry.

Today it was my turn.

A couple of times over the years, Charismatic type missionaries had stopped by and promised her healing through prayer, a hand masseuse from Shallowater had even tried to straighten her hands and feet. Now, nobody sang Amazing Grace, Rock of Ages or Victory in Jesus, any better than Gwem did. Everybody that met her knew--they--had been uplifted by the love and grace and joy ever present at her side. Even after she outlived Charlie, or Chas as she often called him, she regularly and continually praised and thanked Jesus for her blessings. She never quit battling the effects of polio, never gained her strength, her hands and feet were never staightened after her bout, not here on Earth, anyway. But she lived on the sunny side, paid her own way, no disability checks for her. And Gwen, thank you, Jesus, Gwen and Charlie helped teach me to pray, Bill.

So everything's rosy for me right? Naw, not always, not lately, cause today it was my turn. I am not gonna give you a litany of hardships i been sailing around in. You really do not need to hear that. But I have been going into Retirement homes and shariing God's word with a goup of people living at the threshold to eternity(since 5yrs?). Some of 'em are bright eyed and sharp as a tack. Some afre able to understand more that they are able to let on, and some cannot tell me their na-a-ame! A lot of 'em have to be reminded who that guy is that comes most every week and sings and prays and reads the Bible to them, yours truly.

That is a little bit of how, I am not so sure when, but recently, I began to think 'I'm just spinning my wheels. I am not accomplishing a thing.' I even bought a new watch, it has two time keeping systems on it. An analog or sweep hands system and a digital LED system. Well almost two weeks into my wearing it the digital system up and quits. No more LED, no more stop watch, no more alarm clock, no more handy night light, no more military time. Just the three sweep hands showing the hour minutes and seconds.

For three months I have been wearing this broken watch and wondering, "Why me O Lord?" I can't even buy a decent watch! I start pestering the resident answer man, known here abouts as Dr Randy, asking many of my doubting questions, and as I recheck verses and scripture, and see the answer to one of those multitude of questions, I call Randy and excitedly, tell him of my resolution there concerning some timing of Jesus' manifestation...lo and behold as I hang up the phone and check my time piece, I notice the digital apparati are once again clicking, so to speak.

What a grand coincidence you say? Not I, and never again! For a couple of days later when I web logged about this very occurence, giving to God credit for His great providence, but thinking all the while this may be just coincidence, just as I pressed the publish button and into the blogosphere it went I looked and percieved that my LED was once again quit.

I tried batteries but to no avail, and discovered, by tinkering, the watch has bent out of shape and can't work without some extreme contortions. You might say coincidence, but I say it was a sign, a sign for me to know God was checking to see if I am paying attention. Which brings me back to the reason for my being up here today. Today it was my turn.

The next day, Saturday, after my watch's digital began to work again, at Bible study in the retirement home I am speaking to my friends about Praying in Eclipse. You know the eclipse, it is that time when all is gray and heavy, nothing seems to fit, nothing gets corrected, despite our best efforts and humility and persistence and prayer and memory of the lightness of being in God's good graces. Yes, today it was my turn.

There is a lady in th study who just started coming a week or two ago. I had learned her name is Elva. She seems very aware and alert, if a little unsure. As I finish I see she has moved from the back to up close, (is this my first altar call? I think now in retrospect, Tim) After the session I stop by to speak to her and thank her for coming, for she is milling about there in front of me noticably: You know, today it was my turn.

I ask her how her stay is going, and she says 'OK'. but she hopes to leave as soon as she is healed from a heart condition, to return to California where she was a park ranger for thirty years. So I ask her if she has family close by, and she says, a bit miffed, 'None that will claim me!' I am taken aback, a dear gentle lady ex park ranger who is not loved and adored by her family, so I pause there a little longer, sensing her frustration, and to allow her to vent. She doesn't, vent, I mean. She begins to talk about how good her experience in the home is, Randy Christopher-one of yours, and where she will go when she gets out. She is smiling calmly, though her eyes are moist and lookiing intently into my face. I turn back to the family statement and ask her what she means her family doesn't claim her?! and bluster 'Why on Earth not?!' Her smile fades into a gentle understanding and with a stoic but friendly look she asks, Do you know what they said to me when I came in here? They said, 'Now you can't go to church any more.' It is as if the Devil is tipping his glass and spilling a celebration and laughing with her family, yet here is God looking at me through Elva's reassuring eyes explaining to me that this is one reason why I am here-to help Elva specifically and others like her know that God knows them and loves them and has provided for them ahead of time and in the nick of time. He is Emet Elohim Emet; that is to say faithful and true God. from Deut 7:9Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to thousand generations.

This is key. Will God's love reach out into the generations from the starting point of you own doorway? Today it was my turn. Retirement homes ministry is in need of readers, singers, musicians, sitters of a spell and other grandchildren of all makes and kinds who love the Lord.

avoidance of corruption

God is all powerful

It seems all is lost except Jesus saves. So then we should be guarded in the appllication of our gift of generosity so that God's purposes be edified.

A funny thing happened...chapter 14/Getz

I am a turtle. I hide my fears in a vest pocket. I try to enjoy this as security. With security there is peace. But when the shell-cracker arrives, the pick pocket makes a tangential passing, peace is lost and security exposed as false. Thus it becomes known that even in seclusion there is not security, rather vulnerability. Now to what am I vulnerable? If I am vulnerable to God, then Love enfills and His power enables and rather than reactions of angst and fear, senses of security and peace abound. An abounding peace must by application be intentionally inclusive, and if inclusive by mutual acceptance, then is there security.

Surely by these scriptures is this concept underwritten:

KJV Romans 12:16
16. Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

18. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

19. Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.

KJV Romans 15:5-6
5. Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:
6. That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

KJV Ephesians 4:1-3
1. I Therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
2. With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
3. Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Adam Highly Conjectured

So God created Adam, and placed him in the Garden, and set him to work tending the Garden and caring for all that was in it. And as Adam moved around tending the Garden he noticed that all other creatures had their helpmeat and Adam felt alone when he was not talking with God and so God caused Adam to sleep and pulled from Adam a rib and from that rib He formed Eve. And Adam loved Eve as if she were his own flesh and blood for she truly completed him. Eve looked about the Garden and was amazed. Adam led Eve through the Garden and gave her the names of all that lived there in the Garden. He showed her all the good things to eat. Then he took her to that special place in the Garden where God had set His Beauty and his Glory. These trees were so magnificent that they must have been
especially blessed by God. Eve spoke of how attractive they were and
how beautiful the fruit of the one tree was.

Adam then told her that the one tree with beautiful fruit was the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and that they were not to eat of it and that it would be better if she did not even touch it, since he was to tend it
personally because to eat of it would be mortally injurious. Eve believed Adam, and smiled warmly as she realized that Adam was drawn to her and wanted to care for her and provide for her and protect her within the tenets of strength and knowledge and love he had been given by God.

So I think I might wriite concerning evangelism and the first block I encounter is that Calvin rears his head.

So do we envangelize those who have no inclination or desire to be evangelized? Well how in the world do we ascertain that is the case if we do not begin to evangelize even the determinedly lost.

Then how do we begin if we are to receive the blessing of encouragemengt from our efforts? We must attenuate to the Spirit.

How do we know it is the Spirit? If we can find it in scripture without leaving off context.

What is the context? God made all there is while dwelling in pre-existance. Sending light and separating dark from light.

Would you dwell in darkness or in light?

Is the darkness cold? There is no light.

Is the lightness fun? There is always forgivenness.
